Beautiful weather, wonderful hosts and an unmatched garden venue served as the backdrop for a meet-and-greet with Piet Oudolf, Roy Diblik and Pastor Reshorna Fitzpatrick on September 10.
“Planting not only moves people, it brings them together,” said world-renowned landscape designer Oudolf, who is leading the planning efforts. “Sears Sunken Garden is the perfect urban space to recultivate an urban oasis. With your help, it will not only be a beautiful respite for the community, but also a destination for garden lovers everywhere.”
More than forty people enjoyed learning about the Sears Sunken Garden, while touring Northwind Perennial Farm. Owner and noted plantsman and designer, Roy Diblik, made the case for inspiring urban beauty through plants as he showed off a few of his own new creations.
Pastor Reshorna Fitzpatrick of North Lawndale discussed the importance of restoring outdoor spaces in these vital urban communities.
“We’ve hit the ground running,” she told the group. ”We have already raised $1.5 million, through grants and individual donations. With your help, I know we will reach our February goal of $5 million so we can finally break ground in Homan Square.”
In October of 2023, the Driehaus Foundation announced a $1 million grant to Friends of Sears Sunken Garden.
“Sears Sunken Garden perfectly reflects the Driehaus Foundation’s view that every Chicago neighborhood needs and deserves historic preservation, beautiful public spaces and community gathering spots to thrive,” says Anne Lazar, Executive Director, Richard H. Driehaus Foundation
